This course is designed for the new firearm owner or those who want to feel more comfortable with a firearm. Students will receive the knowledge and skills associated with owning and caring for a firearm in a safe manner. The classroom will be the location for the majority of the instruction, and the student can opt for instruction in the range after the classroom portion where the new knowledge and skills will be applied.

Students will learn about the following topics: Safe Gun Handling; Pistol Knowledge; and Ammunition Knowledge.

The class is a great refresher for former shooters that are taking more time with their hobby, or those less familiar or new to firearms. Regardless of your experience, this class will offer valuable information concerning:

  • Safe handling of firearms
  • Pistol and ammunition knowledge
  • Legal firearm ownership
  • Aiming, sights, and proper grip
  • Cleaning
  • Use of training firearms to build your skills
  • Optional: 30 minutes of range time to put classroom information into practice

Students should bring the following items: A firearm and 50 rounds of ammunition if possible (secured in your car); eye and ear protection; appropriate clothing for range; and FOID or ID. Rental firearms and ear and eye protection are available.

Instructor Brian Wright

Right On Target welcomes Brian Wright as our Firearms Instructor. Brian has been a resident of the Kankakee County community for the past 30 years and has been safely using and teaching firearms for the past 10 years. Brian has over 30 years in the field of education and holds a doctorate degree from Illinois State University. He is an expert in instruction and uses his knowledge of firearms to help his students develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude associated with the safe and effective use of firearms.

Brian is a certified NRA Firearms Instructor teaching NRA Basic Pistol, NRA CCW, NRA Personal Protection Inside the Home, NRA Personal Protection Outside the Home, Defensive Pistol, and Advanced Pistol courses.
